When Elmo Batterton and Frank Weihmeir broke ground for their Morton Auto Auction in March 1978, their hope was to be open before the end of the year, and they made it. On November 29, 1978 the first evening sale was held in the brand new four-lane, up-to-date facility on 10 acres of land. Located in Central Illinois, about halfway between Chicago and St. Louis and serving both areas, the new auction was well received. But, as so often has been the case in this business, heavy snow, cold, wind, and ice proved to be the greatest start-up challenge during one of the worst winters in many years. With the snow melted, flowers beginning to bloom, and spirits renewed in the spring of 1979, the auction decided to make some changes. The starting time was switched to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, the restaurant added hot lunches, soups, sandwiches, and snacks to the menu, and the auction began a tradition of monthly party sales featuring free food and periodic promotions and special events. Morton Auto Auction received a serious shock in December 1983 with the sudden death of Elmo Batterton. But thanks to a dedicated staff and loyal customers, the auction continued to expand and prosper. More land was purchased and developed and in 1988 more office space was added and dealer parking was increased and improved. Since then, transports have been purchased to aid in pickup and delivery of vehicles, auction operations have been computerized, and the state made improvements to the highway which provides access to the auction. The auction now covers 30 acres which allows more expansion as needed. Starting time for the weekly Wednesday sale is now 9:30 a.m., and registered dealers now come from almost every state of the Union. The average weekly consignment has grown from 300 in 1979 to over 700 in 2007. Auction staff now includes over 100 full and part-time employees, some of whom have been with auction almost from the beginning. “Their loyalty and support have been a big part of making this auction one the dealers can respect and rely on,” says Frank Weihmeir. In 1991 Roger Bohanon, who formerly managed the auction’s fleet/lease and repo operations, joined Frank Weihmeir and his daughter Carolyn Weihmeir as co-owner of Morton Auto Auction. In 2006, Frank, Roger and Carolyn sold the auction to Steve and Ted Krupa who are carrying on the strong tradition of service.
